In the "Away Game" series, I examine the world of football and its gender dynamics. As a woman and a photographer, I explore football culture from several angles: through the atmosphere of the neighborhood, the structure of the group, and even the equipment.
In this series, I place myself among the subjects playing football. I know the game well and seek to belong as part of the group. But the presence of an active woman who is presented as the focus of the work shifts the dynamic of the game; for these works, I hand-made balls featuring my face and lips. As they scrimmage, passing around my likeness as presented in a stereotypically seductive style, it is clear that it is very difficult to be “one of the guys” without sacrificing femininity.
I hear and see the game of football from a different perspective than men. I find its words, acts, and slang inherently masculine in a way that forces me to be an outsider. By superimposing myself on the ball, I find myself both exalted and demeaned. The “Away Game” series frames existence for so many outsider groups who exist beyond the circle of brotherhood.
